The Baroque style originated in Italy in the early 17th century, at the time of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. It was strongly encouraged by the Catholic Church to express the grandeur and splendour of the faith. The Palais du Luxembourg in Paris, built for Queen Marie de Médicis in 1615, is an early example of the influence of the Baroque style outside Italy.
